The American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry (ABMSP) has had all three of its certification credentials approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), thereby meeting the international standards for an accreditation program as set forth in ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024:2003. ABMSP is the only podiatry accreditation program approved by ANSI and joins only 21 other organizations having met the rigorous standards, which included an extensive application process and a 2-day site visit to its headquarters by ANSI assessors. Read the full press release here. The American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry was organized in 1986 by podiatrists for the purpose of granting board certification to office-based or ambulatory surgeons. Incorporated in 1986 as the American Institute of Foot Medicine (AIFM), the name was changed in 1992 to better reflect its mission. The Board now offers certification to qualified podiatrists in three areas of practice:
The American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry offers board certification to podiatrists in three specialty areas: Primary Care in Podiatric Medicine; Podiatric Surgery; and the Prevention and Treatment of Diabetic Foot Wounds and in Diabetic Footwear. The California Board of Podiatric Medicine has authorized diplomates of the American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry to advertise their certification from the Board in the State of California. Also, the Board’s certification examinations have been approved for reimbursement by the VA as an educational benefit for eligible veterans. The American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry is the only podiatric certification program accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), a national accreditation body for certification programs, and the Board is in the process of applying for accreditation from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) under the ISO International Standards for Accreditation for Bodies Operating Certification of Persons. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) accredits only specialty boards for medical doctors and osteopathic doctors and does not recognize any boards that offer board certification to podiatrists. The American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry offers certification in podiatric specialties and is not affiliated in any way with ABMS or any Member Board of ABMS.
