Maintain Certification

Have you ever said: "How do I maintain my certification?"

Recertification

Recertification is mandatory every four years. The process includes completion and submission of a rigorous application, current license, payment of dues, and documentary proof of having completed a minimum of 80 continuing education hours in the previous four years. Continued adherence to The American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry Code of Professional Practice is required at all times. Currently, over 900 podiatrists nationally are Board Certified including published authors, researchers, directors of podiatric residency programs, professors, officers of professional organizations, members of state licensing boards, and consultants for insurance companies

FAQ

How often is recertification required?

Recertification is required every 4 years. All certifications are valid through March 31st. Recertification applications and guidelines are mailed out in December and are due no later than March 1st of your expiration year. If you fail to submit and have your recertification accepted, your certification will be revoked, and you will be required to start the certification process over by applying for and passing the certification examination and then submitting of new cases.

Will I receive a new certificate?

Yes, you will receive a new certificate that reflects your new valid through date. Should you wish for a duplicate certificate, please write to the board office and include payment of $50 for each 11x17 certificate you would like.

Can I send you my application in bits & pieces?

No, please send in your completed application. This way you know everything was together and should be in good order. We will return any application that is missing information.

For the continuing education credits, what time frame is acceptable to use for recertification?

You may use credits from March 1 (4 years prior to your recertification) – March 1 (of the year your certification expires).

  1. For Primary Care in Podiatric Medicine and/or Podiatric Surgery, 80 hours of continuing education is required over a four year time frame. Please note, this may be slightly higher than your state’s regulations. The 80 hours must be “A” credits and related to podiatry (not office management, medicare billing, etc).
  2. If you have the Prevention and Treatment of Diabetic Foot Wounds and Foot Wear certification, 16 contact hours are required in the area of DIABETIC WOUND CARE. You may NOT use general podiatry contact hours, they must be specialized. If you attend a conference that has some breakout sessions related to diabetic wound care, you can show this in the program with how many hours the course was/or amount of CEs given.

How can I advertise my credential?

Please see the Guidelines for Advertising which is at the end of the Code of Professional Practice under
IV. APPROVED METHODS OF ADVERTISEMENT.
